Bandage dresses were born in the 1980s, under the creative mind of Hervé Léger, one of the most prominent and controversial French designers in history. Léger created the first model of his masterpiece, using strips of fabric that had been left over and were going to be discarded.

He took them home, where his inspiration led him to sew them together, creating the first bandage dress in history. When he presented the garment, Hervé Léger marked a before and after in fashion, the bandage became an icon of the 80’s being a piece that made a second skin for women, giving them freedom and highlighting their figure to the maximum.

Undoubtedly, the bandage was a dress that made an impact, took over the catwalks and had as exponents the most important models of the time, including Eva Herzigova and Cindy Crawford, who wore it both inside and outside the catwalks. Many consider that the bandage dress was the star garment of the most important models of the 90s.

HISTORY OF BANDAGE DRESSES

CREATOR OF THE BANDAGE DRESS, HERVÉ LÉGER

Hervé Léger was the creator of the bandage and thanks to this he became famous all over the world. The beginnings of this French designer in the fashion world were behind the catwalk as a stylist during the Chloe fashion shows.

It was there where his inspiration was born, which he used to design hats. Then in 1980 he met the great Karl Lagerfeld, who hired him to work as an assistant for the renowned brands Fendi and Chanel.

Lagerfeld advised him and motivated him to create his own brand when he was 28 years old, Hervé Léger was born as a brand and in 1993 he was already reviewed by the New York Times thanks to his bandage dresses. It should be noted that the real name of this designer was Peugnet but he changed it at the suggestion of Karl Lagerfeld, to achieve greater acceptance in the U.S. market.

Subsequently, in 1998 the firm Hervé Léger was bought by the BCBG Max Azria group, so the creator of bandage dresses created a new firm called Hervé Leroux in 2000.

With this signature, a new stage in Hervé Leger’s professional life as a designer was born, keeping of course, his iconic bandage. During this time many celebrities wore his designs, including Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett and Penelope Cruz. Also noteworthy is his role as creative director of Guy Laroche during the years 2004 and 2006.

By then he stood out with his creation for the renowned actress Hilary Swank, an incredible dress with which she received her Oscar award, being one of the best dressed in the history of the awards. Hervé Léger died at the age of 60 due to a brain aneurysm, leaving a great mark within the textile industry and the fashion world, both for his designs, as for the conception of each of them.

BANDAGE DRESSES AND THEIR CONTROVERSY

Bandage dresses have been involved in some controversy, because its creator, Hervé Léger stated that his bandage dresses were not for voluptuous women with prominent hips, nor for those who have flat chests, so he advised them not to use this garment.

This was undoubtedly very badly received by a public that struggled to highlight the figure of a natural woman, leaving aside the patterns and standards imposed on the catwalks. She even said that she regretted that her dress became popular among the stars of reality shows and productions of this type. For this reason, she said she refused to give her free creations to celebrities who were not classy enough.

Léger also sent his pointed messages to the homosexual public, saying that his dresses were not for women who have worn pants all their lives. All of these comments were widely frowned upon by the fashion world audience and outside of it as well.

Hervé Léger lost much of his popularity after attacking part of the female public with his views. However, this did not prevent many women, even if they did not conform to the designer’s canons, from wearing his bandage dresses according to their own preferences and styles.
